Jos Buttler Calls Time As England's White-Ball Skipper After Champions Trophy Exit

England suffered a hefty blow after the cricketing titans were handed an upset by Afghanistan in the ICC Champions Trophy. The eight-run loss affected England's hopes for a successful CT run as they were knocked out of the tournament by the Hashmatullah Shahidi-led side. Ahead of the Three Lions' final CT match against South Africa, Jos Buttler publicly announced that he would step down as England's white-ball skipper.

"I'm going to stand down as England Captain. It's the right decision for me, It's the right decision for the team, and hopefully, Somebody else who can come in and work closely alongside Baz to take the team back to where it needs to be.

“I think it is quite clear. This tournament was going to be important results-wise and for my captaincy. Obviously, two losses and being out of the tournament with a bit of a hangover of some tournaments before, I think, I just probably reached the end of the road for me and my captaincy, which is a shame. I'm sad about that. With Brendon coming in only recently, I was really excited to work closely alongside him and hope for a very quick turnaround and take the team forward. But it's not quite worked out that way. So, it just feels like it's the right time for me and also for the team to have a change," Jos Buttler said at the pre-match press conference.

The Legacy Of Jos Buttler as England's White-Ball Skipper

Jos Buttler took the reins as the white-ball skipper after Eoin Morgan announced his retirement in 2022. Buttler's reign opened with a bang as he went on to win the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2022. However, the Three Lions' performance drastically declined after that, as they failed to defend their ICC titles in two occasions – the ICC Men's ODI World Cup 2023 and ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2024 – as Australia (ODI WC) and India (T20 WC) emerged as the champions.

In the 21 ODI encounters they have played, the Jos Buttler-led side lost 15 match-ups, which included the ODI series against the Rohit Sharma -led Team India in the lead up of the Champions Trophy. In 44 ODIs, the 34-year-old has a record of 18 wins and 25, while one match ended up with no result. In the 51 T20Is, he has 26 wins, 22 losses and three NRs.

It is yet to bee seen who would emerge as the new England white-ball skipper after Jos Buttler.
