With New Zealand dictating terms of play and India vying to curtail the trail, the match was reaching its boiling point on Day 3 of the 1st IND vs NZ Test in Bengaluru. The outside temperature was also not simmering down in the afternoon, propelling some spectators to resort to savoring Ice Cream. The camera caught one fan in attendance who was enjoying his cone. Ravi Shastri, who was handling the commentary duties at that time, could not refrain from narrating what he observed and perceived.

Ravi Shastri Receives Flak Over A Comment

As India were batting at 22/0 after 6 overs, the camera panned at the spectators where three of the attendees were seen relishing their respective Ice Cream pieces. Shastri noticed one of them and deliberately displayed satire.

"It is hot. You really need that ice cream. But someone is hiding behind. He is a big unit. Where is the ice-cream boy?" Shastri said on commentary.

Fellow Commentator Sunil Gavaskar joined in and gave a follow-up remark.

"He is actually hiding it. Because someone in his family must have told him that you should not be eating ice cream," Sunil Gavaskar said.

"There he goes and out comes the cone. The ice cream has disappeared and the cone remains. He is a big bloke. He is tucking into it. It is really hot," he concluded.

The comments did not land well with social media users, who threw flak at Ravi Shastri for allegedly "fat shaming" the fan on live television.

Meanwhile, New Zealand have posted a fine total of 402 on board, taking a heavy lead of 356 over India. Team India in the second innings showcased a far superior batting display in comparison to the horrid performance in the first. Openers Yashasvi Jaiswal and Rohit Sharma gave a cautious start and following their dismissal, Virat Kohli and Sarfaraz Khan took over. Unfortunately, Kohli departed on the brink of stumps on Day 3. India finished the day at 231/3 after 49 overs. The cloud of the trail still carries 125 runs.
