The first rain delay occurred on a Sunday, ultimately pushing the match to the reserve day. At that point, India was at 147/2 after 24.1 overs. Virat Kohli and KL Rahul resumed their innings the next day after a delay of nearly an hour and a half due to rain. Fortunately, rain did not interrupt India's innings on the second day, and Colombo witnessed some exceptional batting from Kohli and Rahul.

India made a strong start with the new ball, with Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj causing difficulties for Pakistan's openers, Fakhar Zaman and Imam-ul-Haq. Bumrah's delivery, angling in from around the wicket, found the outside edge of Imam's bat, giving India their first breakthrough. Hardik Pandya followed with a dream delivery that sharply came back in to dismantle the stumps of Pakistan's captain, Babar Azam.

India had the upper hand at that point when the rain frustrated Rohit. Rain forced the covers on the pitch when Pakistan were 44/2 after 11 overs. Unlike the previous night, the rain subsided fairly quickly. Naturally, India anticipated a swift resumption of play, knowing that there were still nine overs left to constitute an official game. It was during this period that Rohit engaged in an animated conversation with umpires.
