  • Rohit Sharma recently led India to a Champions Trophy Win.
  • Team India recently lost the Border Gavaskar Trophy Series 3-1 to Australia.
  • There are doubts over Rohit Sharma's future as Test skipper.

The suspense over Rohit Sharma's future as the Test captain remains after Team India's shambolic run at the Border Gavaskar Trophy. While the recent Champions Trophy success may reinforce his case to remain as Test skipper, a big decision is expected to be taken during the IPL 2025 season. But as of now, Rohit remains as Team India's red-ball skipper.

Call Over Rohit Sharma's Test Captaincy Expected To Be Taken During IPL 2025

Team India's glorious run in the ICC Champions Trophy gave them the spark they needed. Captain Rohit Sharma's credibility in white-ball cricket has heightened after he led the side undefeated, and also won the coveted title. However, the Men in Blue's run in red-ball has been shaky, as they are coming off a poor outing at the Border Gavaskar Trophy Series while Down Under. Huge calls are expected to be made before the Indian side embarks on its next test tour in England. While Rohit is expected to remain as skipper, a big decision will be made during the IPL 2025 season.

"Technically, Rohit remains the Test captain. He voluntarily benched himself from the last Test in Sydney, where he explained that a team can't carry on with multiple out-of-form batters. After Australia Tests, India haven't played any Tests, and hence there has been no change in Test captaincy. Also, Rohit never said he doesn't want to play Tests," a BCCI source said while speaking to PTI on conditions of anonymity.

Gautam Gambhir To Have Major Influence In Building England Tour Strategy

Team India will be leaving for the England tour right after the conclusion of the IPL 2025 season. When the IPL series is in play, the BCCI's selection committee is expected to outline the strategy for the England tour. But head coach Gautam Gambhir's perspective is expected to have a key influence on the decision-making process.

"The selection committee gets a break during IPL. Obviously, with all matches televised, they always don't need to travel unless they have some specific strategy or they want to watch a particular player from up close. So once IPL starts, the blueprint for England series will be drawn at some point. But (coach) Gautam Gambhir's viewpoint will have a lot of weightage," the sources added.

The IPL 2025 season will kick off on March 22, with the opening clash happening between the Kolkata Knight Riders and the Royal Challengers Bengaluru at the iconic Eden Gardens.
