Ind vs Eng: From rising up to the challenge in the summit clash to brilliantly leading the side to the Champions Trophy glory, India captain Rohit Sharma has not put a foot wrong. It has been a month to remember for Rohit. Things were not looking up for the India captain since he opted out of the final Border-Gavaskar Test at the Sydney Cricket Ground. Jasprit Bumrah led the side at SCG in Rohit's absence and despite putting up a fight it was not good enough as Team India conceded the coveted title after losing 1-3.
That is when it just seemed that it was the end of the road for Rohit, at least in Tests. But surprisingly, Rohit did not announce his retirement from the longer format after the SCG loss. There were whispers that things are not exactly perfect between Rohit and the new head coach, Gautam Gambhir . What lay ahead for Rohit was an all-new challenge - the 50-over- format - which India had not played in a long time due to a packed T20 schedule. One reckoned this would be Rohit's last throw of the dice in ODIs as well. Reports suggested that Rohit's ODI future would hinge around how the side performs at the marquee ICC event.
Rohit led the side well and silenced his critics as India reached the final. But while Rohit the leader was receiving praise, the batter was being questioned as the bat had not lived upto the billing. But come the final, Rohit shines and how. He turns out to be India's main man in the finale in Dubai. Rohit hit a marvelous 76 off 83 balls to drive the side to a memorable win in Dubai.
Rohit, who one reckoned was done with Tests, as India was playing their next Test in June in England. Rohit reportedly has the backing of the Board of Control of Cricket in India and it's selection panel. Rohit has at times been criticised for his fitness but he personally believes that there is a lot of cricket still left in him.
“He has shown what he can do. Every stakeholder feels that he is the right candidate to lead the Indian side for the tour of England. Rohit too has expressed his eagerness to keep playing red-ball cricket,” said a source.
Now this makes things interesting from a point of view of fans.
