The Mumbai Indians' decision to replace their team captain has stirred a new controversy ahead of the 2024 season. The decision has left the fans livid since most of MI's fanbase roots for Rohit due to his captaincy stint. Apart from franchise cricket, it could also spark genuine concern about Sharma's chances in the T20 World Cup as a skipper, as the selectors may think of going for a new captain.

Will Rohit Sharma not be the captain for T20 WC? 

The startling move by the Mumbai Indians management has left the fans shocked and concerned over the former captain's availability for the T20 World Cup. However, reports have suggested that Rohit will remain the top choice for the BCCI selectors as they make their decision for the final squad.

However, a report shared by the Dainik Jagran claimed that a BCCI official denied the question when he was asked whether Hardik will function as the captain for the T20 World Cup. The official further said that the decision of the franchise would not alter the minds of the selectors and that Rohit would star as the all-format skipper. The report also said that the captain has expressed his desire to be the captain of the T20 World Cup squad. However, any official confirmation is yet to be made.

Sunil Gavaskar upholds MI's decision to replace captain

Hardik Pandya replacing Rohit Sharma as the skipper did not settle well with everyone. MI is under intense scrutiny for their move as situations escalate further. But Sunil Gavaskar has backed MI's decision.

While speaking to Star Sports, Gavaskar mentioned:

"Earlier, he used to score big, but in the last two years they finished No. 9 or No. 10 the year before last year and in the last year they qualified for the playoffs."

"But we missed seeing the mojo in Rohit Sharma that we used to see in the previous few years. Maybe, he was a little tired because of playing continuous cricket, he was a little tired because of captaincy, leading India and the franchise."
