Team India's manager Sunil Subramaniam has announced that the southpaw has been ruled out of the competition due to a fracture on base of the first Meta Carpel of the left hand and they have requested for a replacement as Rishabh Pant

"Shikhar Dhawan has a fracture in the base of his first metacarpal (thumb) of his left hand. Following several specialist opinions, he will remain in cast till mid-July which rules him out of ICC WORLD Cup 2019. So he will not stay back and we have requested Rishabh Pant as his replacement."

Gabbar also did not feature in India's previous two games. The match against New Zealand was washed away due to rain while Rohit Sharma had opened the Indian innings along with KL Rahul against Pakistan.

Meanwhile, wicket-keeper batsman Rishabh Pant will officially replace Dhawan. Pant who had made his ODI debut in late 2018 has only featured in five ODI's and has amassed 93 runs with his highest individual score being 36. At the same time, Pant also provides a handy option as a wicket-keeper as well as India already have the services of two wicket-keepers, MS Dhoni and Dinesh Karthik.

Pant's inclusion received mixed responses on social media. Some believed that he was a good replacement for Dhawan.

While there were some who were not on the same page.
