With the threat of rains looming over Old Trafford, India are scrambling to keep the scoreboard ticking as they are crumbling under the pressure of the New Zealand bowling attack. India lost its openers Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul followed by skipper Virat Kohli for one run each before the game crossed five overs. Chasing a target of 240 set by the Kiwis, India will hope to boost their run-rate while making sure they do not lose many wickets, in case it rains and the Duckworth-Lewis (DLS) method is used to decide the winner of the contest.
Earlier today, the Meteorological Department had predicted cloudy skies and showers during the latter half of the match. With play being called off on 9 July due to incessant downpour after New Zealand completed 46 overs of batting, the game was pushed into the reserve day.
Here's what will happen if rains decide to hamper the game and DRS is used to decide the match winner:
1. If rains hit the match in the 30th over - India would have to score 145 runs by the 30th over in order to win the match
2. If rains hit the match in the 35th over - India would have to score 156 runs by the 35th over to win the match
3. If rains hit the match in the 40th over - India would have to score 166 runs by the 40th over to win the match
4. If rains hit the match in the 45th over - India would have to score 197 runs by the 45th over to win the match
Look at the picture below for further interpretation.
The above mentioned interpretations are published when India was five wickets down. Interpretations for the application of DLS to be made according to the number of wickets fallen at the time of which match is affected by rain.
