'A shrewd tactician': After Ganguly, Ex-IND coach proposes Gambhir for the prevalent coaching job

The calls to appoint former team India opener Gautam Gambhir into the Indian Cricket Team as the head coach have been at an all-time high. After he helped the Kolkata Knight Riders secure a win against the mighty Sunrisers Hyderabad, Gambhir's name has been among the frontrunners to lead the Men in Blue as the head coach. Several former cricketers and pundits have also put his name forward for the role. Now, a former Team India coach has backed the former cricketer to lead the side after Rahul Dravid officially stepped down after the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2024.

Former T20 World Cup-winning coach endorses Gautam Gambhir as Rahul Dravid's successor in Team India

Amid the chatter over Gautam Gambhir succeeding Rahul Dravid as the new head coach for Team India, a big name in Indian Cricket has endorsed the ex-opener to take charge of the esteemed position. While speaking to PTI, former India coach Lalchand Rajput wants to see Gambhir taking up the role to coach the senior men's national cricket team and called him a no-nonsense guy who is a shrewd tactician.

"Gambhir is a no-nonsense guy, he has played cricket the hard way and he reads the game well and that has been seen for KKR (Kolkata Knight Riders) as well.

"KKR was the same team last year and you see the difference that he made this year. He is a shrewd tactician as well. I am sure with all his experience — he has won two World Cup (wins) as a player — that will really add value. He is a good candidate, but it all depends upon BCCI who they want. He will be the right candidate to take Indian cricket forward," Lalchand Rajput said.

Former coach Rajput is a T20 World Cup winner as he guided the Men in Blue, which was then led by MS Dhoni, in the inaugural edition of the marquee tournament. Getting approval from someone who has been a part of the team earlier will be a massive advantage. While no announcement has been officially made, it looks like they might do it after the T20 World Cup 2024.
