Sunil Gavaskar slammed Shreyas Iyer and Shubman Gill

It was Rohit Sharma who took the stride and opened the gaps taking advantage of some shoddy Bangladesh bowling. He missed his half-century by a whisker but his opening partner Shubman Gill continued the onslaught and brought up his first fifty in the ODI World Cup 2023. But soon after, he had to return to the pavilion as he tried to clear the boundary. Shreyas Iyer, too went down cheaply and got out in a similar fashion. Sunil Gavaskar critiqued both Shreyas and Shubman as they got out in a hasty manner while attempting to hit a big shot.

In an interaction with Star Sports, the former Indian captain had a go at the two batsmen"

He (Shreyas Iyer) lost his patience. He was batting on 19, threw his wicket away. Shubman Gill (was batting on) fifty (53), threw his wicket away. You need to know how to get to a hundred and it's important for Shreyas Iyer and Shubman Gill.

Gavaskar was particularly critical of Iyer, who once again tossed out a golden opportunity to stamp his authority at the number four position.

Shubman Gill is at least getting hundreds, Shreyas Iyer is not getting hundreds. He is getting his opportunities to bat at number 4 on pitches as good as these and attacks as toothless as this and he is throwing away the opportunity.

Virat stayed at the crease till the very last moment and ensured India's victory and Gavaskar took the instance to point out the difference between him and the other batsmen.

Kohli never does that. Kohli will seldom ever throw his wicket away. He makes you earn his wicket. And that is exactly what you need. When he got to 70-80, realising that he has an opportunity to get to a hundred and why not? Hundreds don't come everyday.

India's upcoming clash will be a deciding factor over their undefeated streak in the ongoing ODI World Cup, as they will be up against another unbeaten team, New Zealand at the picturesque HPCA Stadium in Dharamsala.
