Rashid Khan gets PENALIZED for his actions during Super 8 clash vs BAN, gets handed a demerit point

The ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2024 has been an incredible showcase as several teams have shown up and showed out in the marquee tournament. But Afghanistan is among the sides who have heavily impressed the global cricket fans. After their showcase in the ODI World Cup 2023, The Rashid Khan-led side delivered a flamboyant performance against some mighty opponents and reached the tournament's semifinal. The Afghans defeated Australia and then Bangladesh in the Super 8 stage. But Rashid was found guilty by the ICC for his actions in one of the Super 8 matches.

Rashid Khan found guilty of code breach, gets slammed with a demerit point by ICC

The ICC has officially reprimanded Afghanistan captain Rashid Khan for hitting his bat on the ground in anger during their T20 World Cup Super 8 match against Bangladesh after teammate Karim Janat had declined a run. Rashid lost his temper in the final over of Afghanistan's innings when Janat turned down a second run on a stroke that the captain had played.

"Rashid was found to have breached Article 2.9 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to throwing a ball (or any other item of cricket equipment) at or near a player in an inappropriate and/or dangerous manner during an international match.

"In addition to this, one demerit point has been added to Rashid's disciplinary record, for whom it was the first offence in a 24-month period," the ICC said in a press release.

The complaint was made by fourth umpire Ahsan Raza, third umpire Adrian Holdstock, and on-field umpires Nitin Menon and Langton Rusere. There was no need for a formal hearing because the captain of Afghanistan acknowledged the offence and accepted the punishment suggested by Richie Richardson of the Emirates Elite Panel of ICC Match Referees.

Level 1 violations are punishable by an official reprimand as a minimum, 50% of the player's match fee as a maximum, and one or two demerit points.

In the rain-affected encounter, Afghanistan overcame Bangladesh by eight runs via DLS to earn a spot in the T20 World Cup semifinals—their first in any ICC competition. The Afghans were energised after pulling off a tremendous victory, but the Proteas crushed the Afghan Atalans in the semifinal to continue their winning streak.
