Australia finally tasted their first victory in the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2023 after two consecutive losses. Australia clinched a five-wicket win against Sri Lanka at the Ekana Stadium in Lucknow. They started by triggering a collapse that saw Sri Lanka going from 125/0 to 209 all out. Mitchell Marsh played a crucial role, scoring a half-century off just 39 balls to help Australia during the chase. Despite early setbacks with David Warner and Steve Smith's quick dismissals, Marsh's rapid innings held their chase together and eventually saw them cross the finish line with 88 balls to spare.

Marsh has a perfect response to Gavaskar's quip
Following the game, Mitchell Marsh engaged in a lighthearted conversation with former Indian captain Sunil Gavaskar about his aggressive batting style, which stands in stark contrast to his father Geoff Marsh's more defensive approach. Mitch Marsh was playfully questioned by Gavaskar about whether his father Geoff, who had a career strike rate of 55.33 across 117 ODIs, ever taught him to play defensively. Marsh humorously replied, "I'm just making up for his poor strike rate."
This crucial victory against Sri Lanka was a much-needed boost for Australia as they now aim to build the momentum required to reach the ODI World Cup semifinals. If they manage to win the tournament, it would make Mitchell Marsh and Geoff Marsh the first father-son duo to achieve World Cup victories in India. Geoff had previously won the 1987 edition of the marquee event held in India.
