After losing to the United States and India in the group stage of the current T20 World Cup 2024, the men's cricket team from Pakistan was eliminated. Pakistan will now need to compete in qualifiers to guarantee a spot in the following World Cup after failing to make it to the Super 8 stage. Pakistan placed second in the most last Twenty20 World Cup in 2022. They made a very poor effort in the United States, though, under Babar Azam's leadership.
On Tuesday, June 18, 2024, an alarming incident unfolded involving Haris Rauf, who attempted to physically confront a fan using foul language and cultural allusions. The situation escalated when a Pakistani fan approached Rauf for a photo, which led to a dispute. Rauf's wife intervened to diffuse the tension, but Rauf's unprofessional behaviour stood out. He unreasonably referred to the fan as 'Indian' despite the fan asserting his Pakistani identity, showcasing the need for composed and respectful reactions from public figures like athletes.
One Pakistani journalist has openly acknowledged speaking with Haris Rauf regarding the incident on ARY News, revealing that Rauf was aware that the fan was Pakistani. Despite this knowledge, Rauf chose to use harsh language and attempted to defame India without any evidence. This situation has raised concerns about the ethical conduct of public figures, emphasizing the importance of responsible and respectful behavior, especially when it comes to sensitive national identities and maintaining diplomatic relations.
Once they were eliminated from the Twenty20 World Cup, the Pakistan cricket squad left Florida. Not travelling with the team were five players: captain Babar Azam, Haris Rauf, Imad Wasim, Azam Khan, and Mohammad Amir. These players will be returning to their own cities by separate flights from Dubai. They should be back in Pakistan by June 22.
After a short time in America the struggling Babar Azam and team will have to play in qualifiers for the next world cup. Pakistan lost twice in the opening rounds—once to their arch-rivals India and once to the United States—and was unable to advance to the World Cup Super 8 stage where India confirmed a sport being unbeatable.
