Manchester United has had a difficult start to the season, with the 20-time English champions currently sitting 14th in the Premier League table, and the club's new leadership is dissatisfied with the pace of change under Erik ten Hag. Amid the team's struggles, the Dutchman has decided to part ways with the historic club.

After Manchester United lost to West Ham, Erik ten Hag has chose to step down as the club's first-team manager. As he exits, Ruud van Nistelrooy will take charge of the side as the interim head coach until a permanent head coach is recruited.

“Erik ten Hag has left his role as Manchester United men’s first-team manager. Erik was appointed in April 2022 and led the club to two domestic trophies, winning the Carabao Cup in 2023 and the FA Cup in 2024. We are grateful to Erik for everything he has done during his time with us and wish him well for the future,” said United in a statement.

Ten Hag joined from Ajax and was tasked with restoring the club's fortunes after former manager Alex Ferguson's retirement in 2013. Despite winning the League Cup and FA Cup in Ten Hag's first two seasons at Old Trafford, United showed no signs of improving from its worst league season in 34 years.

United finished eighth last season, their lowest finish in the Premier League era, and appear to have little chance of competing for the title this season. It already puts the storied team at risk of missing out on qualification for the lucrative Champions League once again.

Ten Hag managed to keep his job after an unexpected victory over fierce rival Manchester City in the FA Cup final in May and a thorough end-of-year review by the club. His contract was then extended for one year, to 2026.

Ten Hag became United's fifth permanent manager after Ferguson's departure, succeeding David Moyes, Louis van Gaal, Jose Mourinho, and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. His departure coincides with a period of significant change at United under new minority owner Jim Ratcliffe.
