Tributes have poured in for Diogo Jota, who died in a tragic car accident on Thursday. The Liverpool star was travelling with his brother when the car went off near the western city of Zamora, as reported by the Associated Press.
The incident happened just days after Jota got married to his fiancée Rute Cardoso. The Spanish Civil Guard confirmed that Jota and his brother were in the car, and no other cars were involved in the crash. Jota joined Liverpool in 2020 and went on to win the Premier League and the Champions League with the English giants.
As per reports, the Lamborghini car had a tire burst and went up in flames. As per marca, Witnesses reported that the car caught fire and spread to the plants on the median strip, prompting them to dial 112.
Tributes have poured on from all corners of the world for the Liverpool forward.
Manchester United posted, "Our deepest condolences are with the loved ones of Diogo Jota and his brother, Andre, and everyone connected with Liverpool FC following today’s heartbreaking news."
Chelsea FC also posted a heartfelt tribute for the 28 year old. "Everyone at Chelsea FC is devastated to learn of the tragic passing of Diogo Jota and his brother, Andre.
“Our thoughts go out to their family, friends and all at Liverpool FC at this incredibly difficult time.”
Premier League took to social media to post, Everyone at the Premier League is shocked and devastated to learn of the tragic passing of Diogo Jota and his brother Andre. Our sincerest condolences go to Diogo’s family, friends, Liverpool FC, and all their supporters at this heartbreaking time. Football has lost a champion who will be forever missed. We will continue to support our friends and colleagues at the club.
GFC Porto wrote on X, “FC Porto is in mourning.
“It is with shock and deep sorrow that we send our heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of Diogo Jota and his brother André Silva, who was also our athlete in the youth ranks.
“Rest in peace.”
FC Barcelona posted on X, “FC Barcelona would like to express their sincerest condolences regarding the loss of Liverpool FC player Diogo Jota and his brother André. May they rest in peace.”
