Liverpool forward Diogo Jota has died in a car crash in Spain, as per several reports. As per Marca, the incident occurred at kilometre 65 of the A-52, Zamora. The car, which also had his brother André, went off the road.
This shocking incident happened just 10 days after his wedding to fiancée, Rute Cardoso.
As quoted by Sportstar, Zamora’s Provincial Council issued a statement. “Two young people die in an accident on the A-52 (Palacios de Sanabria). The Rionegro del Puente Fire Station (Northern Zone of the @DiputacionZA Consortium) responds."
As per the Associated Press, the Spanish Civil Guard confirmed that Jota and his brother were involved in a car crash. The Spanish police are investigating the cause of the accident.
The Portuguese Football Federation issued a statement confirming the death of the star player. “The Portuguese Football Federation and the entire Portuguese football community are completely devastated by the deaths of Diogo Jota and André Silva, this morning in Spain.
Much more than just a fantastic player, with almost 50 caps for the National A Team, Diogo Jota was an extraordinary person, respected by all his teammates and opponents, someone with an infectious joy and a reference in the community itself."
Liverpool issued a statement to pay a heartfelt tribute to their star forward.
"Liverpool Football Club are devastated by the tragic passing of Diogo Jota.
“The club have been informed the 28-year-old has passed away following a road traffic accident in Spain along with his brother, Andre.”
Jota joined the English giants in 2020 and has won three trophies, including the Premier League and Champions League. The Portuguese international has netted 65 goals for Liverpool alongside 26 assists.
