In what was already a dreadful week for Liverpool, it has gone from bad to worse as they have lost their second trophy opportunity in the same week. Liverpool a few days ago were eliminated from the UEFA Champions League after a shock defeat to PSG . Liverpool were initially considered as the favorites to win the UCL title. Following the defeat to PSG, Liverpool faced off against Newcastle United in the Carabao Cup final where they again faced defeat as Newcastle ran away with a 2-1 win to win a trophy after 70 years.
Liverpool and Newcastle faced off in the finals of the Carabao Cup at the iconic Wembley Stadium in London. It was Newcastle who came out on top in their Carabao Cup final against the English Premier League leaders. Newcastle United's Dan Burn opened the scoring for Newcastle United in the 45th minute.
Just a few minutes after the first goal, Newcastle doubled their lead thanks to a goal by Alexander Isak. Liverpool's Federico Chiesa got a goal back for Liverpool in injury time but it was too little too late as Newcastle won a trophy after 70 years.
