When Ratan Tata made Lionel Messi the global brand ambassador of the TATA Motors

Renowned in their respective domains are Ratan Tata and Lionel Messi. At the age of 86, renowned Indian businessman and philanthropist Ratan Tata passed away on Wednesday night, October 9, 2024, in Mumbai. Fascinatingly, there was a time when branding tied Tata and Messi together.

Tata Motors appointed Messi as a brand ambassador first among Indian companies in November 2015. Originally called Zica, their new hatchback has subsequently been renamed Tiago since then. The football player was hired to help advertise its release.

Sadly, the introduction coincided with the outbreak of a virus called Zika, which caused Tata Motors to rethink the car's branding to prevent bad connotations. Lionel Messi once shared his joy of becoming the brand ambassador of an Indian brand, he said:

“I am very excited about my first association with an Indian brand and am extremely thrilled to be a part of the Tata Motors family. I have always been fascinated by India and have heard such great things about this diverse country,”

“Tata Motors is a true representation of India and a well-established brand, globally. It is important to believe in yourself and keep pushing to achieve success and that is what the first campaign stands for,”
Even if Lionel Messi is no longer the Tiago's or Tata Motors' brand ambassador, the car's appeal is still strong. Rumours abound talking on Lionel Messi's possible return to the Tata brand.

Set to premiere over the Christmas season, Tata Kite is expected to be a major release for Tata Motors. With this new tiny vehicle and compact sedan, the business wants to leave a powerful impression once again on the market.

Reports from Motor Octane indicate that Tata Motors just shot a Kite commercial video with Messi. Ratan Tata has gone on to be one of the biggest gems in Indian history.
