Manchester United drew 1-1 with FC Twente in the first round of the Europa League at Old Trafford in a fiercely fought battle on September 26, 2024. In the 35th minute Christian Eriksen opened the score; Sam Lammers equalised for Twente in the 68th minute. United's aggressive attempts and possession supremacy however did not help them to defeat Twente, so a shared point came of consequence. With 19 United shots against Twente's 7, the game highlighted both clubs' onfield tenacity.

Manchester United legend Roy Keane slams Christian Eriksen for Manchester United vs FC Twente

Roy Keane, a Manchester United great, has attacked Christian Eriksen on his comments made last month during a Europa League game. Beginning the season, the Red Devils have struggled; their first European trip came out as a 1-1 tie against Twente on September 26.

Starting the game, Eriksen scored the lone goal for his squad. Following the game, former Tottenham Hotspur player said (as Metro reported):

“It's disappointing. We wanted more in the end but it wasn't good enough. They looked like they wanted it more than us and that can't be right. That was said in the dressing room.”

Emphasising worries about the players' mentality under the Dutch coach Erik Ten Hag and particularly addressing Eriksen's comments, Roy Keane said in an interview with The Overlap:

“I even go back to the FC Twente game and when the players came out after the match, it was Eriksen, again a really poor game, oh my goodness, and when players come out (and say), 'I think they might have wanted it more than us', I kind of gave up at that stage.”

“So he's coming out after the game, I'm looking at him, even if you feel that, and that has happened where you thought they wanted it more than you, you don't bloody say it, you fool, do you?”

The Red Devils have had a letdown overall for the Premier League season. Their first seven games provide only eight points, hence they rank 14th in the rankings under the Dutch manager Erik Ten Hag.
