WC: Former champion Sarita Devi bows out in round two, loses by 5-0

Sarita Devi was knocked out of the WBC after the 2003 world champion lost her bout to Russia's Natalia Shadrina in the 60kg category by 5-0 in Ulan-Ude.

Former world champion Sarita Devi (60kg) was knocked out in round two of the Women’s World Boxing Championships in Ulan-Ude, Russia on Sunday. She lost to Russia's Natalia Shadrina. After receiving a first-round bye, the 2003 world champion, seeded fourth in her category put up a convincing first round as the five-times Asian gold medalist, managed to land some clear punches initially but the Russian pugilist made a strong comeback in the second and third round to overpower the experienced Sarita and won the bout 5-0.

Debutant fails to qualify

While in the other match, debutant Nandini (81kg) failed to find her rhythm at the World stage and was found wanting in all three rounds. The first woman boxer from Chandigarh to represent at the Championships, the 20-year-old boxer fell short in experience and tactics compared to her German counterpart, Irina-Nicoletta Schonberger, who won the bout 5-0 on points. With Jamuna Boro (54kg) and Saweety Boora (75kg) already confirming their place in the pre-quarters, Monday will witness the last set of debutants, Manju Rani (48Kg) and Manju Bamboriya (64kg) taking the ring. Young Manju Rani seeded sixth in the lightfly weight category will take on Ven Tayonis Cedeno of Venezuela while Manju Bamboriya will face fourth seed Italy’s Angela Carini.

Saweety and Jamuna keep Indian hopes alive

On Saturday, former World Championship silver medalist Saweety Boora (75kg) had put up a notable performance to progress into the pre-quarterfinals while Neeraj Phogat bowed out after a contentious verdict resulting in a mixed day for India. Earlier, India witnessed a major upset as Neeraj (57kg) had to endure a surprise loss through a split verdict of 2-3. On Friday, Indonesia President's Cup gold medallist Jamuna Boro (54 kg) had given India winning start at the championship Jamuna started her first-round cautiously but eventually gained momentum. The Indian pugilist displayed sheer dominance from the second round onwards. Using her height to advantage, the Assamese boxer unleashed a flurry of punches to blank Mongolia’s Michidmaa Erdenedalai 5-0.
