WhatsApp is reportedly working on chat themes to let users personalise their chats with wider options than available currently. The Meta-owned chat app is planning to overhaul the user interface through a default theme picker for chats and chat bubbles and multiple design styles. The upcoming functionality would finally offer the level of personalisation that its modded counterparts have been providing to users for a long time.

According to WABetaInfo, WhatsApp beta for Android version 2.24.20.12 includes multiple themes, which users can choose through a picker in the app settings. Similar to how the app lets users choose wallpapers for light and dark modes, the theme picker will support a selection of options for both modes. The theme picker will also likely feature brightness adjustments for better viewing in low-light settings. The screenshots from the report show an even wider assortment of wallpapers, alongside colour accents for chat bubbles on Android.

The report said WhatsApp will offer users granular control over customisation through individual theme settings for chats and chat bubbles. That means the chats can have a light theme while the bubbles show up in dark mode on the phone. Users will also be able to choose a custom wallpaper to match the chosen theme, the report added.

While WhatsApp has not said anything officially about the underway development, its testing hints at an imminent launch. The functionality is currently available to WhatsApp testers for Android, which users can join through the Google Play Store. However, stable WhatsApp users will likely get the new themes in one of the future updates, the rollout timeline of which is unclear currently.

The development comes days after Meta announced the full availability of the verified badge for businesses on WhatsApp. As part of the announcement, the company will streamline the process of receiving the verified badge for businesses, alongside enabling more productivity and enhancing the messaging experience through artificial intelligence.
