India to have 700 million gamers by 2028, says Meta India head Sandhya Devanathan

Speaking at the Indian Gaming Convention 2024, Meta India head Sandhya Devanathan said that India will have 700 million gamers by 2028.

Meta's Sandhya Devanathan at Indian Gaming Convention 2024: Facebook's parent company, Meta, is making a major push in the gaming market in India. Speaking at the Indian Gaming Convention 2024 in New Delhi, Meta India head, Sandhya Devanathan, said that India is expected to have around 700 million gamers by 2028.

She also said that India has the potential of becoming a $8 trillion economy in the future and that $1 trillion of this economy will be driven by various digital initiatives. "India could become an $8 trilion economy in the near future, with $1 trillion driven by digital initiatives, including gaming," she Devanathan at the Indian Gaming Convention 2024.

During her address, the Meta India head also stressed on the economic opportunities that gaming ecosystem will be able to generate in the country. Devanathan said that the gaming ecosystem will be able to generate nearly 300,000 lakh jobs across brands, creators and startups. "The Indian gaming market is poised for explosive growth, and we want to be a part of that journey by empowering developers and creators with the tools they need to succeed," she added.

Meta India head on consumer behaviour and interaction

The Meta India head also shared details about the consumer behaviour on the platform. Highlighting the response on Meta's family of apps, especially on Facebook and Instagram, Devanathan said that around 200 billion reels are played on Facebook and Instagram daily. She also said that 200 million people shop online in India.

Beyond gaming and video, the Meta India head highlighted the company's focus on India. While outlining Meta's long-term vision for Indian market, Devanathan said that the company remained committed to 'fostering innovation and growth within the developer community' and that Meta was working on creating an ecosystem wherein creators engage and monetise their content within their communities.
