The Apple Watch is probably the only smartwatch that matters at this point of time – it's that good. But it’s still far from perfect. One feature that long-time Apple Watch users have been requesting for, for a long time now, is sleep tracking and looks like Apple has heard them. According to a new report, Apple is prepping a sleep tracking feature, internally codenamed Burrito, that will not require new hardware – which could mean the feature has a high probability of working on existing Apple Watch devices.

Sleep tracking with next Apple Watch

Apple will reportedly call it “Time in Bed tracking” and the feature will be accessible via its own dedicated companion Sleep app. While asleep, the feature will allow the Apple Watch’s wide array of sensors to tack the user’s sleep quality as a factor of their “movement, heart rate, and noises.” The Apple Watch will automatically enable Do Not Disturb in bedtime mode.

The new feature seems to be well thought out too. According to the report, Apple is also simultaneously working on a feature that would remind users to charge their Apple Watch should it be low on juice before entering the bedtime mode. The Apple Watch will also automatically turn off the alarm should the user wake up and start their day in advance.

It isn’t exactly clear if Apple is looking to bring sleep tracking to all Apple Watch devices through a software update or if it would launch a new iteration with it, on September 10, and then subsequently bring it to other devices in the lineup. Be that as it may, Apple is rumored to launch the Apple Series 5 on September 10 alongside the iPhone 11 lineup, and the report suggests the Cupertino major may announce the new feature as soon as next week – possibly during the same keynote.

Apple announced watchOS 6 – which is the next major update to the software that powers the Apple Watch - at its annual WWDC keynote event in San Jose, California in early June. The new update is set to be available in September. Some of the new features of watchOS 6 include a menstrual cycle tracking app, a noise app for detecting sound levels that could negatively impact hearing, a new trends tab in the activity app for tracking long-term progress, and not to mention, tons of new Watch faces for customization.
