The Vodafone Rs 1499 prepaid plan that is valid for a period of 365 days, and which was recently made live for the Mumbai telecom circle along with a few other circles, is now extending to other regions as well, and this point in time, the prepaid scheme is live for the Karnataka telecom circle; potentially for selected numbers. The plan which was on a phased rollout is now on an expansion path.

As far as the benefits of Vodafone’s Rs 1499 plan is concerned, it offers free-unlimited voice calling along with 1GB 4G data. Subscribers could also resort to sending 100 free text messages in a day; along with indulging in free calls while on roaming. USP of the plan is its 365-say validity period.

In a few regions, Vodafone is offering a Rs 1699 annual recharge plan that offers identical voice + data benefits as that of the above.

Now, annual prepaid recharge plans have been rolled out by almost all telcos in recent times, including the likes of Reliance Jio, Airtel, and BSNL. In this regard, rumour mills have gone on record stating that the rollout of the annual prepaid recharge schemes by the incumbent telcos has been a result of directly competing with Reliance Jio that was the first to offer the voice + data package with payments being made only for either voice or data, with the other being offered for free.

Whatever the case, it is undeniable that the annual prepaid recharge schemes save subscribers from the hassles of monthly recharges; at this juncture, it is worth noting that multiple incumbent telcos recently made it a mandate for their prepaid customers to resort to minimum monthly recharge to keep prepaid numbers active. Hence, the biggest benefit from the annual recharge schemes is that the monthly hassles could be avoided whilst getting to experience consistent data (offering) on a daily basis.

In the end, the annual recharge plans seemingly benefit the consumer more than they do to telcos – who have customer retention to worry about, if the daily costs in these annual prepaid recharge plans is calculated, it seemingly works out more affordable than imagined. Apart from the recharge aspects, the network coverage of all telcos (including that of Jio) deserves improvement; this may not be a factor while opting for telcos. Do share your thoughts here.
