El Salvador's Deadly Rains | Landslides and Floods Claim 11 Lives Amidst Emergency Declaration
Authorities in El Salvador on June 17 reported the deaths of 11 people linked to landslides and flooding caused by heavy rains. Five people, including two children, died after they were buried in mudslides in Tacuba, near the border with Guatemala, the country's civil protection agency said. Two others were killed early on June 16 when they lost control of their vehicle in the west of the country. Another person died in a landslide on June 15 and a man who died Sunday after a tree fell on his vehicle. Low pressure areas on Guatemala’s Pacific coast and in the Gulf of Mexico are fueling heavy rains in the region. El Salvador's government declared an emergency Sunday and opened some 100 shelters across the country as the risk of flooding increased.
