Hezbollah unleashed a barrage of 140 rockets into northern Israel on Friday, a day after the group's leader, Hassan Nasrallah, vowed retaliation for recent Israeli strikes. The attack, which occurred in three waves, targeted areas along the volatile Israel-Lebanon border, marking a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict.

According to Israel’s military, the rockets targeted sites near the border, where tensions have been steadily rising since the outbreak of the Israel-Hamas war earlier this month. Hezbollah claimed responsibility for the assault, stating that they had struck several Israeli air defense bases and, for the first time, the headquarters of an Israeli armored brigade.

The terrorist group said the attacks were in direct retaliation for Israeli airstrikes on villages and homes in southern Lebanon, which have been hit in recent days. "The goal of the resistance is to prevent the enemy from realizing its goals," Nasrallah said in a speech on Thursday, vowing to continue the daily strikes on Israeli territory.

Here is what you need to know

The cross-border exchange between Hezbollah and Israel has been ongoing since October 8, just after the start of the Israel-Hamas war. While both sides have exchanged regular fire, the intensity of Friday’s rocket attack was noticeably higher than usual.

It is worth mentioning that Nasrallah also referred to the recent sabotage of Hezbollah communication devices, an incident that has escalated tensions in the region. Earlier this week, attacks—widely attributed to Israel—targeted thousands of Hezbollah’s pagers and walkie-talkies, dealing what Nasrallah described as a "severe blow" to the group. Israel has neither confirmed nor denied involvement in the sabotage, which many fear could further fuel the ongoing conflict.

As the violence along the border shows no signs of abating, the prospect of a broader war between Hezbollah and Israel is becoming increasingly likely. Both sides have warned of continued retaliation, raising concerns that the region may be on the verge of all-out conflict.

The attacks have heightened anxieties in northern Israel, where many residents have already been displaced due to the continued hostilities. With no clear resolution in sight, the situation remains fragile as both Hezbollah and Israel brace for further escalations.
