Earthquake strikes Afghanistan's Fayzabad with 5.2 magnitude, no casualties reported

An earthquake of magnitude 5.2  jolted Fayzabad in Afghanistan on Sunday at around 6:53 pm. According to India’s National Centre for Seismology, the earthquake took place 119 km SSE of Fayzabad, Afghanistan.

This comes a day after strong tremors were felt in Delhi, its neighbouring areas after a 5.8 earthquake hit Hindu Kush region in Afghanistan on Saturday.

It is to mention that Afghanistan is frequently hit by quakes, especially in the Hindu Kush mountain range. The mountain region is part of the Alpine belt which is the second most seismically active region in the world after the brutal Pacific Ring of Fire. The belt runs about 15,000 kilometres from the southern part of Eurasia through the mighty Himalayas and into the Atlantic. Adding more to the problem, the Earth’s crust is especially lively in Afghanistan because it is where the Arabian, Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates meet.

The earthquakes occurred just days after heavy rains caused flash floods and landslides in Afghanistan.

Heavy rains and flash floods kill 12 In Afghanistan

At least 12 people were killed in heavy flooding from seasonal rains in Afghanistan, according to a Taliban spokesman and local officials.

Last week, Taliban government spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid that around 40 people are missing after the flash flooding in the Jalrez district of Maidan Wardak province, west of Kabul.

He added that all authorities have been directed to provide necessary aid to the people in the affected areas.

The provincial governor's office in a statement said that hundreds of homes are either damaged or destroyed and the missing people are believed to be under the rubble of collapsed homes.
