Gaza: The Israeli precision airstrike in Gaza has reportedly killed a Hamas leader, also termed as the newly appointed Prime Minister of Hamas. According to reports, through its airstrike, Israel targeted the largest hospital in southern Gaza, known as Nasser Hospital, killing Hamas leader Ismail Barhoum and a 16-year-old boy, while leaving several others wounded. The strike, which occurred on Sunday night, hit the surgical building of the hospital, which triggered widespread condemnation.

As per the reports, Hamas in its statement confirmed the incident saying that Ismail Barhoum, a member of Hamas' political bureau, had taken office just days ago and was being treated at the hospital at the time of the blast. The hospital strike killed two people, including the 16-year-old boy who had undergone surgery two days ago, the territory's Hamas-run Health Ministry said. During the airstrike, several others were left wounded as a massive fire engulfed the facility after the strike.

The Israeli military confirmed the strike on the hospital, saying it hit a Hamas militant operating there. However, Israel's actions have been widely criticised, with many accusing the country of disregarding civilian lives. "Hamas exploits civilian infrastructure while brutally endangering the Gazan population," the Israeli military said, blaming civilian deaths on Hamas because it operates in densely populated areas.

Notably, Israel has been carrying out airstrikes on Gaza for months, resulting in massive casualties and damage to infrastructure. Nasser Hospital was overwhelmed with dead and wounded when Israel resumed the war in Gaza last week with a surprise wave of airstrikes, Hamas says.

The conflict between Israel and Hamas has been ongoing since October 2023, when Hamas launched a surprise attack on Israel, killing 1,200 people. The attack also saw Hamas kidnap 251 people, who were taken as hostages. Several hostages were released by Hamas during a temporary ceasefire reached between the two sides.

The international community has condemned Israel's actions, calling for restraint and an immediate ceasefire. The United Nations has expressed deep concern over the escalating violence, urging both sides to protect civilians and respect international humanitarian law.

Further details regarding the airstrike are being awaited.
