New Jersey: An Indian woman who couldn't speak English has gone missing shortly after arriving in the United States for an arranged marriage, prompting an ongoing investigation by authorities in Lindenwold, New Jersey.
The missing woman, 24-year-old Simran Simran, arrived in the U.S. on June 20. According to officials, she was expected to meet a prospective groom as part of an arranged marriage agreement. Just days later, she mysteriously disappeared.
Surveillance footage reviewed by investigators shows Simran standing alone, checking her phone, and appearing to wait for someone.
The video, taken shortly before her disappearance, did not show any signs of panic or visible distress. Police were first alerted to her disappearance on Wednesday.
Simran’s limited ability to communicate in English is believed to be a major hurdle in both understanding what may have happened and locating her. Authorities say she had no clear support system or network in the country.
Efforts to reach her family back in India have also been unsuccessful so far.
She was last seen wearing gray sweatpants, a white t-shirt, black flip-flops, and diamond-studded earrings. She is described as being about 5 feet 4 inches tall, weighing approximately 150 pounds, with a small scar on the left side of her forehead.
As the search intensifies, investigators are now considering whether Simran’s trip was truly about marriage. Some early findings suggest she may have used the arranged marriage as a way to travel freely in the United States, although police have yet to verify this theory.
The Lindenwold Police Department is urging anyone with information to contact Detective Joe Tomasetti. Authorities continue to search for answers as Simran’s disappearance raises growing concern in the community.
