Caracas: Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores were forcibly dragged out of their bedroom while they were sleeping during a high-intensity US military operation in Caracas, according to reports. The late-night raid, carried out in the early hours of Saturday, saw US Army's Delta Force storming inside the couple’s residence located within the heavily-guarded Fort Tiuna military complex and taking them into custody.

US President Donald Trump later confirmed the operation, calling it a “large-scale strike” conducted in coordination with American law-enforcement agencies. In a statement posted after the raid, Trump said that Maduro and his wife had been "captured and flown out of the country". Trump claimed that the raid was part of USA's long-running campaign against Maduro's alleged involvement in international drug trafficking and organised crime.

Later, Trump took to social media platform Truth Social to share the first picture of Maduro in US custody, purportedly on a ship. Trump captioned the picture, “Nicolas Maduro on board the USS Iwo Jima.” Trump claimed that Maduro and his wife are currently on a ship and are being taken to New York.

Before Maduro was captured, tanks were seen swarming towards the Presidential Palace in Venezeula. Venezuelan forces also detained residents near the palace amid escalating tensions.

The US has indicted Maduro on several charges, including narco-terrorism conspiracy, cocaine importation conspiracy into the United States, possession and conspiracy to possess machineguns and destructive devices in connection with those drug offenses. Trump has repeatedly accused Maduro of presiding over what he has described as a "narco-terrorist" government.
