Republic TV has accessed first and exclusive visuals of Mumbai 26/11 terror attacks mastermind Hafiz Saeed following his arrest by the Punjab Counter-Terrorism Department in Lahore, Pakistan. He was earlier on Wednesday arrested by Punjab CTD from Lahore and was sent to prison on judicial remand. He is going to face trial on the charges against him.
The video shows Hafiz Saeed around lawyers and officers of the Punjab CTD, following his arrest. In the video, he can be seen leaving Pakistan's Gujranwala Court after being sent to 7 days judicial custody.
In a shocking incident, the Pakistan CTD officials can be seen treating the Mumbai 26/11 attacks mastermind as a VIP. At the end of the video, Saeed is seen being seated in his own SUV with the protection of his aides around him.
The development came amid the pressure built by international agencies on Imran Khan government to act against terror outfits and terrorists operating out of Pakistan. Pakistan is under massive pressures from the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) to take action against terrorists and terror activities in its countries. Earlier in June, the FATF issued a deadline to Imran Khan government till October 2019 to prove that it has taken actions to counter-terror financing, failing which the financial institution would not grant the sanctions to the cash-crunched country.
Amid building pressures, Pakistan authorities had earlier launched a crackdown on Hafiz Saeed and other terrorists. Pakistan's Punjab Counter-Terrorism Department (PCTD) had registered over 20 cases against Hafiz Saeed and his 12 aides on the charges of "terror financing" in different cities of Punjab province. It was alleged that the funds collected by Hafiz Saeed and his supporters were used to finance the Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT).
Being charged guilty, Saeed and his six aides challenged the charges of terror financing and money laundering levelled against them in a Pakistani court. The JuD chief's petition claimed that he and others were not members of Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), alleging no nexus with LeT or Al-Qaeda. Saeed was on July 15 he was granted pre-arrest bail by an anti-terror court.
The US Department of the Treasury has designated Hafiz Saeed as a Specially Designated Global Terrorist. Also the United States, since 2012, has offered a USD 10 million reward for information that brings Saeed to justice.
