Greece: Donkeys forced to carry obese tourists uphill despite ban

Even after the Greek government banned any passenger over 100 kilograms from riding donkeys, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) posted a new picture from Santorini where mules are still being tormented. In 2018, PETA found nearly 100 donkeys and mules were used to carry the tourists over a long staircase to reach an old town of Fira, several times a day. However, new research shows that even after international protests, the holiday island is still keeping up with the tradition of using donkeys for transporting tourists more than 500 steps.

'Massive animal cruelty'

PETA criticized the 'massive animal cruelty' happening in Greece in the name of tourism which also creates a dangerous situation for both, the animal and the human. The video was reportedly filmed in September but released on November 13 shows the animals stumbling up the steps as they are seen tired from the exhaustion. This also puts the life of tourists walking on foot in danger. However, some tourists still use a 'pet-friendly' option to climb the stairs, which is cable cars, there are still many who ride the animals. Reportedly, may tourists documented several instances where the donkey almost ran over them, while mules kicked and violently pushed aside, causing more panic among the visitors.

Donkeys painted as Zebras in Spain

In a shameful incident, two donkeys were painted black and white to resemble zebras at a safari-themed wedding reception in Spain's Cadiz on Saturday. The hapless animals were seen plodding around outside a bar by a concerned local in El Palmar, a town in Cadiz, who reported it to animal rights campaigners on Saturday. "The donkeys, in danger of extinction, used for tourist exploitation," wrote Angel Tomas Herrera Pelaez while sharing the images online. The animals were reportedly transported in during the morning, painted in the beating sun and not given shade throughout the day. Such brutality performed upon the animals raised outcry among the netizens who were furious at the sight.
