Russia: Customs officers detain woman who smuggled 2 kg gold in China

A woman was detained by the Russian customs officers at the Chinese border for smuggling eight pieces of gold into China on the instructions of a Chinese man

According to the Russian custom official, a woman was arrested at the Chinese border smuggling nearly two kg of gold which was hidden in her shoes. The authorities reported on November 5, that the girl was caught while she was spotted walking in an unusual way. 

A Russian woman detained by customs officers

According to Marina Boiko a spokeswoman for the regional customs authorities told media that the woman of the Russian national was taken into custody at a custom’s office located in eastern Siberia after the appointed officials observed that the woman was “nervous and acted in a suspicious manner”. She further said in her statement that the woman was walking differently, she “unnaturally placed one foot in front of the other”

Eight pieces of gold found in her shoes 

When the suspicious officers tried investigating the matter, they found eight pieces of gold in her shoes, which weighed a total of 1.9 kg (4.2 pounds). The spokeswoman also said that “The ingots had been attached to the insoles of her shoes with duct tape”. The value of the gold found has been estimated to be more than 5 million rubles (USD 79,000). The officials reported that the gold bars were being illegally smuggled and there were no necessary documents. The authorities have filed a criminal case against the woman who was reportedly smuggling gold for a Chinese man.

Multiple incidences of smuggling 

This is not the first case, there have been several incidents where Russians have been caught trying to smuggle gold into China. Boiko said, “Since the beginning of the year, officials have repeatedly detained Russians trying to smuggle gold into China.” The incidents are only increasing. In the month of August, a Russian woman was detained for carrying 10 gold ingots.

Man caught on Delhi airport for smuggling gold

Recently a  man was taken into custody from the Delhi airport after the customs officials informed that he was trying to smuggle gold worth over Rs 30 lakh into the country. According to the statement released the man was intercepted after his arrival from Jeddah, Saudi Arabia on October 27. After his luggage was investigated, he was found carrying four pieces of gold weighing 805 grams and having a market value of Rs 30.82 lakhs. The passenger was arrested and the gold was seized.
