Space Age: 12 bottles of Red wine sent to International Space Station

The Northrop Grumman capsule which was launched on November 2, carried a delivery of 12 fine French wine bottles to be delivered at the International Space Station. But here’s the catch, the French wine bottles have been sent for a Science experiment and the astronauts are not allowed to drink it. 

12 bottles of wine sent in Space

The bottles of red Bordeaux wine have been sent to space to age for a year before they return to the Earth's surface. The experiment is being conducted by a Luxembourg-based start-up, called Space Cargo Unlimited along with the Universities of Bordeaux, France, and Bavaria, Germany. The objective of the experiment is to observe the effects of weightlessness and space radiation on the process of ageing. After the space-aged wine is returned back to Earth, it will be compared to the Bordeaux wine which will age on Earth. This interesting experiment will also help in adding new food properties and flavours to the food industry.

Wine ideal for research in Space

The reason why wine was chosen for the experiment is that it involves the use of both yeast and bacteria and a chemical reaction, which makes it ideal for a space experiment. There have been six such missions planned by the company for the next three years. According to NASA, the International Space Station will be open to more such business ventures and later private astronaut missions.

Baseball in Space Station

NASA astronauts celebrated the World Series which is the annual championship league of Baseball by playing baseball in space. Christina H Koch, Jessica Meir, and Andrew Morgan are currently the residents of International Space Station for various research programs. However, they did not stay behind to celebrate the ongoing Fall Classic and the astronauts were reportedly anticipating the game between Washington Nationals and Houston Astros. Jessica Meir shared the image saying that the game found its way to the Space Station while the video of the three crew members playing baseball in the space lab was also shared by the official page for the coverage of World Series.
