New Delhi: Weeks after a tense Oval Office confrontation between US President Donald Trump and Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy , the two leaders had a phone call to address critical diplomatic matters. Trump confirmed the one-hour conversation in a post on the social media platform X, where he described the call as "very good.”
Trump revealed that much of their discussion centered around the recent dialogue with Russia’s Putin, shedding light on the need to harmonize the demands and requests from both Russia and Ukraine. He also expressed optimism, stating that "progress was being made" and that the talks were on track.
“Just completed a very good telephone call with President Zelenskyy of Ukraine. It lasted approximately one hour. Much of the discussion was based on the call made yesterday with President Putin in order to align both Russia and Ukraine in terms of their requests and needs. We are very much on track, and I will ask Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and National Security Advisor Michael Waltz, to give an accurate description of the points discussed. That Statement will be put out shortly,” Trump said.
Further clarity on the specifics of the call will be provided by Secretary of State Marco Rubio and National Security Advisor Michael Waltz, Trump said.
The phone call comes after a heated confrontation between US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at the White House on February 28.
During the meeting, US Vice President JD Vance slammed Zelenskyy, accusing him of being "disrespectful" to the United States. Trump also pressured Zelenskyy to strike a deal with Russia, warning, "or we are out."
As Zelenskyy resisted calls to negotiate a ceasefire with Russian President Vladimir Putin , Trump criticized him for "gambling with World War Three." Tensions escalated, leading to Zelenskyy being asked to leave the White House earlier than scheduled.
