UNGA: Bangladesh PM Sheikh Hasina reaches NY to attend 74th session

Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina reached New York on Monday to attend the 74th session of UNGA and will address the UNGA session on September 27.

Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina reached New York on Monday to attend the 74th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). The Bangladesh Ambassador to the United States Mohammad Ziauddin and Permanent Representative of Bangladesh to the United Nations Masud Bin Momen welcomed the Prime Minister at the Airport. A Dhaka daily reported that Hasina will deliver her address at the UNGA on September 27.

Hasina to be part of India's event at the UN

According to Foreign Secretary of India, Vijay Gokhale, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be joined by Sheikh Hasina on September 24 at an event organized by India in the UN to commemorate the 150th anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. The event titled ‘Leadership Matters – Relevance of Gandhi in Contemporary Times’ will be attended by several Heads of States including Hasina, where they will also express the relevance of Gandhi in contemporary times in their own world. The event will include the launch of Gandhi Solar Park which is the installation of solar panels on the rooftop of the UN headquarters. Remote inauguration of the Gandhi Peace Garden at the State University of New York Campus at Old Westbury will also be the part of the event.

Kashmir and Rohingya during bilateral talks

Hasina is on an eight-day official visit to the US. India's permanent representative to the UN, Syed Akbaruddin had earlier responded to the question of whether the issue of Kashmir or Rohingya would come up for discussions during Prime Minister Modi’s bilateral talks with Bangladesh PM on the sideline of UNGA. "Each country will have its specific element. As close friends and neighbours, we will be discussing what issues are being raised because this is the way we deal with our, neighbours," said Akbaruddin. He had termed Bangladesh as one of India’s close friends in the neighbourhood.

Bangladesh PM to visit India in October

Hasina is also scheduled to visit India in October to attend India Economic Summit of the World Economic Forum (WEF). After the Summit, PM Modi and Hasina will hold bilateral talks on October 5. Teesta water-sharing agreement has been of the unresolved issue between the two countries and Bangladeshi Prime Minister was hopeful that it will be resolved soon. "We are optimistic that the unresolved issues between the two countries will be sorted out soon. We hope we will get positive results over the aforesaid issues before my visit to India," Hasina had told the Parliament on September 12.
