Texas man drinks 4 litres of energy drinks, complains of chest pain

A 26-year-old man, Ignacio Palomo almost died after drinking eight to ten cans of energy drink on a daily basis and had to rush to the Accident & Emergency ward

A 26-year-old man almost died after drinking eight to ten cans of energy drink on a daily basis. The man had to rush to the Accident & Emergency ward (A&E) with pain in his chest and left arm that lasted for almost nine hours. He claimed that he could not sense his arm, sweating and had been feeling sick. According to the reports, the doctors in Texas, the US carried out medical tests and found that his heart rate, blood pressure, and oxygen levels were normal. The doctors then discovered something unusual that one of his arteries had a complete blockage.

Consumption of energy drink is a growing health concern

The patient then explained to the doctor that he often drinks somewhere around eight to ten cans of 473ml energy drinks each and every day which is directly equivalent to around four litres. According to the reports, the patient denied any drug consumption and admitted smoking a packet of 20 cigarettes a day frequently for the last two years. The report said that consumption of energy drinks is a growing health concern due to its frequent availability, limited regulation and increasing use, especially among the younger generations. It substantially contains higher caffeine content as compared to soft drinks or coffee beverages. The study shows that there is a significant risk of harm if it consumed in large quantities.

The man consumed between 1.2 and 1.6 g of caffeine per day

The man was discharged after two days of being admitted from the hospital. He was given a dosage of medicines which includes an antiplatelet agent, an ACE inhibitor, a beta-blocker and a statin. He also admitted to quit smoking and stop consuming energy drinks. The medical report revealed that there are multiple ingredients among the common brands of energy drinks, with the most frequent being caffeine, taurine, glucuronolactone, and ginseng. A normal energy drink contains 0.34 mg of caffeine per ml which means the man consumed between 1.2 and 1.6 g of caffeine per day, which is considered to be a lethal dose and hazardous for health.
