After almost losing her lips to surgery at a 'Botox Party', a woman from England is now raising awareness about the importance of performing cosmetic procedures only by medically trained professions.

Rachael Knappier, a 29-year old recently got lip filler injections by a beautician at a friend's house at a 'Botox Party' who noticed a bump on the side of her lips. To which the beautician told Knappier that she could 'even it out' by injecting the other side of the lip with fillers. After getting the injection, Knappier received a piercing pain, but was told that it was normal. Later at 2am, Knappier woke up to find her lip tripled in size, so much that it touched her nose.

Knappier then spoke to her beautician on FaceTime, who told her that she was having an allergic reaction, urging her to take anti-histamine. However, Knappier went to the hospital where she was told that she had to go to a beautician to get the fillers in her lip 'dissolved'

After a visit to the local anesthetic nurse, Knappier found out that the lip injection had led to necrosis (the death of most or all of the cells in an organ or tissue), that began to wreck the soft tissue of her lip. Leaving her with only one option, visiting a private clinic in London where the doctors would be able to dissolve the filler in her lips, that eventually got her lips back to its normal size a few days later.

The doctors told her that the swelling on her lips was probably a cause of injecting the fillers close to a vein or artery that led to vascular occlusion.

In the United Kingdom, there is no law that prevents non-medical professionals from performing injectable cosmetic surgeries. Thus, Knappier wants to now raise awareness for the hazards of receiving cosmetic procedures through a non-medical trainings. Her petition has till date reached 1,957 signatures.
