FIERCE BATTLE: Congress fields Acharya Pramod Krishnam, Gathbandhan names Poonam Sinha against BJP's Rajnath Singh from U.P's Lucknow constituency

The Congress party on Tuesday announced the name of Acharya Pramod Krishnam as its candidate from Lucknow Lok Sabha constituency against BJP candidate and Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh.

The Congress party on Tuesday announced the name of Acharya Pramod Krishnam as its candidate from Lucknow Lok Sabha constituency against BJP candidate and Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh.

The Rahul Gandhi-led party released its list on Tuesday, declaring names of three other candidates in the fray for the polls. 

The Congress pitted its candidate for Lucknow on the same day when the Home Minister filed his nomination papers from the constituency and opposition SP-BSP-RLD alliance fielded Poonam Sinha to contest the polls from the seat. 

On Tuesday, as Home Minister Rajnath Singh filed his nomination papers from Lucknow, the Akhilesh Yadav-Mayawati alliance fielded Poonam Sinha, wife of newly joined Congress leader Shatrughan Sinha to contest from the Lok Sabha constituency from Uttar Pradesh, moments after her induction into the Samajwadi Party.

Senior BJP leader Rajnath Singh had won from the Lucknow seat in the 2014 general elections. 

The alliance has left two seats, Rae Bareli and Amethi, for the Congress. Lok Sabha elections in Uttar Pradesh are being held in all seven phases. The second phase of elections is on April 18 and counting of votes for all phases will take place on May 23.

While there were speculations that the Congress would leave BJP bastion's Lucknow parliamentary seat for Rajnath Singh, it fielded Acharya Pramod Krishnam to defeat the BJP in its stronghold. Acharya Pramod Krishnam who runs an ashram in Sambhal. In 2014 general elections, he was the Congress's candidate from the Sambhal area, however, he could not gain victory and emerged on the fifth position. 

A stronghold for BJP since 1991, Lucknow is a prestigious seat for the saffron party in 2019 polls. After former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee held the Lucknow constituency from 1991 to 2009, BJP leader Rajnath Singh contested from the seat in 2014 elections and emerged victoriously.
