Frontdesk on deathbed: Frontdesk, a Milwaukee-based startup specialising in managing over 1,000 furnished apartments across the United States, has reportedly laid off its entire workforce of approximately 200 employees. According to the media reports, this announcement came on Tuesday after the firm's efforts to secure additional capital fell through.

The mass layoff unfolded during a concise Google Meet session, where CEO Jesse DePinto conveyed the company's intention to initiate a state receivership—a measure serving as an alternative to outright bankruptcy. Frontdesk has yet to provide an official statement on the matter. However, an automated message on its customer helpline advises patrons with existing reservations to make alternative arrangements, promising forthcoming communication within a fortnight.

Frontdesk’s excursion

Started in 2017, Frontdesk had garnered approximately $26 million in funding from notable investors including JetBlue Ventures, Veritas Investments, and Sand Hill Angels, according to Crunchbase. Despite recently acquiring its smaller competitor, Zencity, the startup's financial challenges persisted.

Frontdesk had also pursued a bridge financing round, promoting an expanded building management strategy to potential investors. Nevertheless, the initiative failed to materialise, leading to the company's operational standstill.

The venture's underlying business model, centred on leasing apartments at prevailing market rates for short-term furnished rentals across 30-plus markets, encountered substantial hurdles.

Factors such as considerable upfront expenditures, fluctuating demand, and rate variables have contributed to the broader industry's challenges. Comparable firms grappling with analogous issues include Stay Alfred, Domio, Lyric, Zeus Living, The Guild, and WanderJaunt.
