New Delhi: The Tata Group has entered a crucial leadership transition after Tata Sons Chairman N Chandrasekaran decided not to seek another term when his current tenure ends in February 2027. While Chandrasekaran will continue in the post until then, the announcement has triggered discussions over who could take charge of the conglomerate next.
Among the names now being discussed in business circles is TV Narendran, the Managing Director and CEO of Tata Steel. However, there has been no official confirmation from Tata Sons that Narendran is the frontrunner or that he has been selected for the top post.
Who Is TV Narendran?
Narendran, 61, is one of the most experienced executives within the Tata Group. An engineering graduate from NIT Trichy and an alumnus of IIM Calcutta, he joined Tata Steel in 1988 and has spent nearly four decades within the group.
His career at Tata Steel has spanned sales, marketing, international business and senior leadership roles. A significant part of his career was spent in Thailand, where he was involved in expanding Tata Steel's presence in Southeast Asia.
Narendran later took charge of Tata Steel's India operations and became the company's Managing Director in 2013. His long tenure has given him experience across both domestic and international operations.
Why Is His Name Being Discussed?
Narendran's emergence comes as Tata Sons begins the process of finding Chandrasekaran's successor. His long association with the group and experience of managing a large industrial business are seen as key strengths.
There is also a notable difference between Narendran and Chandrasekaran's professional backgrounds. Chandrasekaran rose through Tata Consultancy Services and the group's technology-services business, whereas Narendran's career has been rooted in manufacturing and heavy industry.
Narendran has also led Tata Steel through challenging periods involving high debt, volatile steel markets and difficulties surrounding its international operations. During his tenure, the company worked on improving cash flows, reducing debt and strengthening its domestic business while navigating complex issues in Europe.
That experience could be significant for the Tata Sons chairman's role, which requires oversight of businesses operating across industries and geographies, as well as an understanding of global markets, regulation and long-term capital allocation.
Tata Succession Is Not Yet Decided
Despite the growing discussion around Narendran, his name should not be interpreted as a confirmed nomination or indication that he is the frontrunner.
Tata Sons follows a structured succession process involving its board and Tata Trusts. The trusts hold roughly two-thirds of Tata Sons, making them a significant stakeholder in any leadership transition.
The eventual successor will inherit a group facing major strategic challenges across businesses including Air India, semiconductor investments, Tata Capital and TCS. The next chairman will therefore be expected to balance the group's diverse businesses while maintaining Tata's long-term institutional approach.
Chandrasekaran To Complete Current Term
Chandrasekaran informed the Tata Sons board that he would not seek reappointment after his current tenure expires on February 20, 2027. He is expected to remain chairman until the completion of that term.
His decision has opened one of the most closely watched succession processes at the conglomerate in recent years. As the selection process takes shape, Narendran's extensive experience inside the Tata ecosystem makes him one of the names attracting attention - but the final decision remains some distance away.
