UK rail network disrupted: Microsoft Windows users worldwide are experiencing the "Blue Screen of Death" (BSOD) error, causing systems to shut down or restart abruptly. This widespread outage has significantly disrupted various industries, including train networks, stock markets, aviation, media outlets, and banking.

In the UK, the rail sector has been hit particularly hard. Southern, Thameslink, Gatwick Express, and Great Northern—brands under Govia Thameslink Railway—reported extensive IT issues affecting their services.

"We are unable to access driver diagrams at certain locations, leading to potential short-notice cancellations, particularly on the Thameslink and Great Northern networks," the company stated.

Train operator TransPennine Express (TPE) warned passengers it had been affected by the IT outage. It said: “Please be aware that some TPE stations and systems are having IT issues. Please purchase tickets on board if you are unable to do so in stations.”

Additionally, real-time customer information platforms are impacted, further complicating operations.

UK’s National Rail confirmed that its IT teams are "actively investigating to determine the root cause of the problem."

Impact on train networks

The Windows outage severely affected train networks by disrupting critical IT systems that manage various operational aspects. These include accessing driver diagrams, which are essential for coordinating train schedules and ensuring that trains run on time. Without these diagrams, trains may face cancellations or delays, especially during peak hours.

Furthermore, the outage impacts real-time customer information systems, which provide passengers with updates on train schedules, delays, and cancellations. The lack of timely information can lead to passenger confusion and overcrowding at stations, as commuters are left without guidance.

Overall, the Windows outage not only hampers day-to-day operations but also diminishes the reliability of rail services, affecting thousands of commuters across the UK.
