India Test Fires Nuclear Capable Agni-4 Missile With 4000 Km Range From Odisha After Agni-3 And Agni-Prime Success
India successfully conducted a user trial of the nuclear-capable Agni-4 missile from Chandipur, validating all parameters and reaffirming the credible minimum deterrence and operational readiness.

Balasore: India carried out a successful user trial of the medium-range ballistic missile Agni-4 on Wednesday from the Integrated Test Range at Chandipur in Odisha. The Ministry of Defence confirmed the reports, affirming that the launch was conducted under the supervision of the Strategic Forces Command (SFC) and met all operational and technical requirements set for the exercise.
The ministry officials asserted that the trial was part of a routine process to check the reliability and operational readiness of the weapon system. According to the ministry, the test reinforced India’s strategic deterrence posture and showcased the preparedness of the forces tasked with operating the country’s nuclear delivery platforms.
The Agni-4 is a surface-to-surface missile powered by a 2-stage solid-fuel rocket motor, having a strike range of up to 4000 km and is designed to be road-mobile with canister-based launch capability, giving it greater flexibility for quick deployment. The latest trial added to a series of validations conducted earlier this year, including successful tests of Agni-Prime and Agni-3.
The Ministry of Defence noted that the missile was fired from Chandipur and the entire flight was monitored by an integrated network of radars, telemetry stations and electro-optical systems. The senior scientists from the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and officials from the SFC were present during the launch. All mission objectives were achieved, with the flight path and performance tracked in real time.
The test was deemed as a user trial aimed at reaffirming the dependability of the missile under operational conditions. The ministry also emphasised that such periodic trials are essential to ensure that strategic systems remain ready for deployment when required.
Advanced Technology And Enhanced Mobility
The Agni-4 incorporated several indigenous technologies intended to improve accuracy and performance. As per information, it is fitted with advanced avionics and a ring laser gyro-based inertial navigation system.
Further, weighing less than earlier versions in the Agni family, the missile uses a 2-stage solid propulsion system. The missile's canisterised, road-mobile configuration allows it to be transported and launched from different locations, reducing preparation time and increasing survivability. The defence officials stated that these features provide the SFC with greater operational flexibility.
Trial Reaffirms Credible Minimum Deterrence
The Defence Ministry stated that the successful trial reaffirmed India’s policy of maintaining a credible minimum deterrence while strengthening the operational readiness of the strategic missile forces.
The launch on Wednesday followed earlier successful trials of the Agni-Prime and Agni-3 missiles conducted earlier this year. The defence officials said that the continued validation of the Agni series reflected India’s ongoing efforts to test and certify the strategic systems under realistic conditions.
The latest test further underlined the role of periodic user trials in confirming that India’s nuclear-capable delivery systems remain reliable and mission-ready.
