New Delhi: The National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) 2024 rankings for engineering colleges were released on August 12, and while several Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) have dominated the top spots, a number of newer IITs have failed to make it to the top 50 and even the top 100 in the engineering category.

As expected, the older and more established IITs continue to lead the rankings, with IIT Madras, IIT Delhi, and IIT Bombay securing the top three positions, respectively. These institutions have consistently been at the forefront of engineering education in India and have once again demonstrated their academic excellence and research output.

However, in contrast, some of the newer IITs, established in recent years as part of the Indian government's expansion of technical education, have struggled to secure a place in the top tiers of the NIRF rankings.

Newer IITs Outside Top 50

Several newer IITs, such as IIT Bhubaneswar, IIT Tirupati, IIT Jammu, IIT Palakkad, and IIT Bhilai, ranked 54th, 61st, 62nd, 64th, and 73rd respectively, did not manage to break into the top 50. Despite their efforts to build a strong academic foundation, these institutes are still in the process of establishing themselves as leading engineering institutions in the country.

IIT Dharwad and IIT Goa Fail to Secure Top 100 Spots

Particularly notable is the performance of IIT Dharwad, which was placed in the 101-150 range, and IIT Goa, which did not feature in the rankings at all. It is noteworthy, that IIT Goa did not even participate in the NIRF Rankings 2024.

The methodology draws from the overall recommendations broad understanding arrived at by a Core Committee set up by MHRD, to identify the broad parameters for ranking various universities and institutions. The parameters broadly cover “Teaching, Learning and Resources,” “Research and Professional Practices,” “Graduation Outcomes,” “Outreach and Inclusivity,” and “Perception”.
