Major Shaitan Singh was born on December 1, 1924, in Banasar village, Jodhpur, Rajasthan, into a military family. His father, Lt Col Hem Singh Bhati, had served in the Jodhpur Lancers during World War I and earned the 'Order of the British Empire' for his bravery. Inspired by his father's legacy, Major Shaitan Singh chose to pursue a career in the Army. He later married Shagun Kanwar, and they had a son, Narpat Singh, who now lives in Jodhpur. He began his military service with the state force before joining the Kumaon Regiment.

On November 18, 1962, in the freezing heights of Ladakh in Aksai Chin, the 120 soldiers of Charlie Company faced over 3,000 Chinese troops in the Battle of Rezang La. Commanding the 'C' Company of 13 Kumaon, Major Shaitan Singh led a determined attempt to recapture Platoon 7's position. Even after being seriously injured by machine gun fire, he continued to lead, moving between posts to inspire his men. His bravery and resolve kept the morale high, despite the harsh weather, challenging terrain, and relentless enemy attacks.
