Panipat the movie is another historical drama film produced and directed by Ashutosh Gowariker. Panipat is the story of the Third Battle of Panipat fought between Maratha warrior Sadashiv Bhau and Afghan’s Ahmedshah Abdali. Arjun Kapoor will be essaying the role of the Maratha warrior and Sanjay Dutt will be seen as the antagonist. Actor Kriti Sanon will essay the role of Parvati Bai, wife of Sadashiv Bhau. Panipat is set to release this year on December 6. Apart from Panipat here are other big-budget Bollywood films.
1. Mughal- E-Azam
This K. Asif film which was released in 1960 is considered as a masterpiece in the Indian cinema. Mughal-E-Azam is the story of Prince Salim following in love with a courtesan named Anarkali. This romantic leads to a war between Emperor Akbar and his son Salim. Actor Prithviraj Kapoor played the role of Akbar, Madhubala played the role of Anarkali and Dilip Kumar played the role of Salim. Mughal-E-Azam at one point in time held the record of the highest-grossing film and the costliest film ever produced in Indian cinema.
2. Jodhaa Akbar
Just like Panipat, Jodhaa Akbar was another big-budget film helmed by director Ashutosh Gowariker. Jodhaa Akbar was a historical romance film which portrayed the romantic story between Emperor Akbar and Rajput princess Jodhaa Bai, and the subsequent consequences of their matrimony. Aishwarya Rai played the role of Jodhaa Bai and Hrithik Roshan played the role of Emperor Akbar. The film was critically acclaimed and even won praises from the audience. Jodhaa Akbar was successful enough to bag two National Film Awards as well.
3. Padmaavat
This 2018 film directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali starred Deepika Padukone, Shahid Kapoor and Ranveer Singh in lead roles. Padmaavat is loosely based on a folk poem and portrays an epic dram film of a battle between Alauddin Khilji played by Ranveer Singh and Rawalratan Singh of Mewar played by Shahid Kapoor, as Khilji wants to meet Rani Padmaavati. Even though the film received backlash before its release, Padmaavat successfully broke several box-office records.
4. Lagaan: Once Upon a time in India
This sports film has also been directed and produced by Panipat director Ashutosh Gowariker. Lagaan is a fictional film which is yet based on some true facts from the British Raj. The film is a story about a few villagers from India competing against the British colonies in order to waive off the high taxes paid by the villagers. The film not only was a high-budget investment but also had an ensemble cast with a blend of British and Indian actors. Lagaan was also nominated for the Oscars in the Best Foreign Film category.
