Yo Yo Honey Singh is known for giving hit tracks like Brown Rang, Love Dose, Saiyaan Ji, Deso Kalakaar and many more. Despite the hit tracks, the Punjabi singer was often criticised for his 'vulgar' lyrics. Now, once again, he is in the news but for all the wrong reasons. Actress Neetu Chandra has filed a public interest litigation in the Patna High Court, complaining against alleged vulgarity in singer Yo Yo Honey Singh's latest chartbuster 'Maniac'. What do we know about Maniac?

A week ago, Honey Singh released his latest track Maniac featuring Esha Gupta in the musical video from the album Glory. The song has been presented by Gulshan Kumar & T-Series and is produced by Yo Yo Honey Singh. The lyrics have been written by Leo Grewal and has also Bojpuri versions in between. The Bhojpuri part is sung by Ragini Vishwakarma and penned by Arjun Ajanabi.

It is an upbeat Punjabi track that blends urban slang. While the song was trending high on the music charts, it grabbed the attention of  Patna-born actress Neetu Chandra, who filed a PIL against the lyrics of the song.

What is the case against the song Maniac all about?

The PIL, which is likely to come up for hearing later this month, has named Honey Singh and those who have collaborated with him on the song, including lyricist Leo Grewal and Bhojpuri singers Ragini Vishwakarma and Arjun Ajanabi. In her petition, the Patna-born actress, who has featured in many Bollywood movies and produced a couple of critically acclaimed Bhojpuri and Maithili films, has sought a direction from the court to the respondents to "amend the lyrics".

The actress has cited concerns over the song's "overt s*xualization"  and treating women as mere objects. She further alleged that the song uses "Bhojpuri language to normalise vulgarity" and throws "women's empowerment out of the window".

What can be the controversial lines in Maniac lyrics?

The line “Didiya Ke Devra Chadhal Bate Najari” is a Bhojpuri phrase which portrays a scenario where a woman feels uneasy because of her sister’s brother-in-law (devar) giving her an unwanted, suggestive look.

The line “Didiya Ke Devra Chadhavle Bate Najari, Choli Ke Chijuiya Chikhal Chahe Jabri” translates to “The sister’s brother-in-law has bad intentions and is persistently eyeing what’s hidden inside the blouse.” It describes a woman feeling uncomfortable with her brother-in-law’s inappropriate gaze.
