Amanda Seyfried to not attend Seven Veils premiere at TIFF despite SAG-AFTRA waiver
Amanda Seyfried starrer Seven Veils is directed by Atom Egoyan. The film will have its premiere on September 10, under the Special Presentations sidebar.
Amanda Seyfried recently confirmed that she will not be attending the premiere of her film Seven Veils, scheduled for the Toronto International Film Festival to be held later this year. This comes despite the film having received a SAG-AFTRA waiver. Seyfried's stance is in solidarity with the currently ongoing twin strikes in Hollywood.
3 things you need to know
- The Toronto International Film Festival is scheduled to be held from September 8 to September 17 this year.
- The SAG-AFTRA strike commenced on July 14, joining hands with the WGA strike which had been in motion since May 2.
- Seven Veils deals with the theme of a theatre director re-presenting her former mentor's work as she deals with painful memories from the past.
Amanda Seyfried to not attend the Seven Veils premiere at TIFF
Amanda Seyfried took to her Instagram handle to affirm that she would not be attending the Toronto International Film Festival for the Seven Veils premiere. While she expressed her complete support for the film, calling it "magical", also mentioning that she was technically in the clear to promote the film - courtesy the SAG-AFTRA waiver, it just did not feel right to her. For context, under the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike, films not affiliated with AMPTP studios, have been given waivers on account of being Indie projects.

Amanda's note read, "I am SO PROUD of this movie and it hurts my heart not to stand next to the beautiful people who helped create this special film at our @tiff_net premiere next week. @sagaftra has given us a waiver to promote this fully, magically independent Canadian movie but it doesn't feel right to head to the fest in light of the strike. I can't wait to show you all SEVEN VEILS when the time is right(and we've come to a fair agreement for actors and writers)."
SAG-AFTRA waivers have become a grey area
The Venice Film Festival recently marked the presence of Jessica Chastain who was there in lieu of her film Memory, by Michael Franco - a recipient of the SAG-AFTRA waiver. Adam Driver is also up for an appearance for his film Ferrari, also cleared for the waiver. Conversely, Viola Davis, who was set to begin production on her film G20, has halted any further work despite the film being cleared under the SAG-AFTRA waivers.
