Inside Out 2 Becomes 1st Entry Into $1 Billion Club In 2024, Fastest Animation Film To Achieve Feat

Disney Pixar's Inside Out 2 has revived the Hollywood box office this year, in a similar manner as Barbenheimer did last year. The animation film has crossed the $1 billion mark globally, becoming the first film this year to achieve the feat. It has grossed $1.01 billion worldwide in just three weeks of its release since June 14. Among animated movies, it’s the 11th film to achieve the milestone.  

A breakdown of Inside Out 2 box office domination

Inside Out 2 continues to be a box office phenomenon, the likes of which the industry hasn’t seen since Barbie almost a year ago. According To AP, in just three weeks of release, it’s earned nearly $470 million in North America and $545.5 million internationally, bringing its global total to $1.01 billion. The sequel is the only 2024 release to cross the billion dollar mark and it did it in just 19 days, a record for an animated film.

“The film’s stunning global success once again illustrates that audiences the world over will respond to compelling, entertaining movies, and that they want to enjoy them on the big screen,” said Michael O’Leary, president and CEO of the National Association of Theatre Owners, in a statement.

The storyline of Inside Out 2 and other box office details

According to The Hollywood Reporter, he sequel introduces a whole new cast of emotions who are brought into “head”-quarters when the story’s young heroine, Riley, becomes a teenager. Joy, Sadness, Anger, Fear and Disgust aren’t so sure how to feel about the arrival of Anxiety, Envy, Ennui and Embarrassment.

Back in 2015, Inside Out earned $858.8 million globally. Top 3 amongst the highest-grossing animated movies so far are The Lion King (2019) with $1.6 billion collections, followed by Frozen 2, 2019 ($1.4 billion) and The Super Mario Bros Movie, 2023 ($1.3 billion).
