Margot Robbie starrer Barbie made its theatrical debut on July 21. Two weeks in, the film crossed the $1 Billion mark at the worldwide box office. Despite its successful run on the big screen, the Greta Gerwig directorial is all set to start screening on the digital platforms.

2 things you need to know

  • Barbie featured Margot Robbie, Ryan Gosling and America Ferrera in main roles.
  • It clashed with Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer at the box-office.

When is Barbie available to stream?

Barbie will be made available on digital platforms on September 5, according to Variety, which is less than a month away. On Amazon, you can now pre-order the movie for $19.99. The film will also be available to stream on Max from next month. Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav stated, “We really believe in the motion picture window — let it play out … go into PVOD, take it through the windows that have worked forever [in the business]. When it goes on Max, it will have a good impact in the fall.”

Since taking over the company, Zaslav has been a fierce advocate for the theatrical window. It is in contrast to the previous Warner Bros Media administration, which sparked controversy with its theatrical-day-and-date experiment on HBO Max during Covid.

The team behind Barbie

Barbie is written by Greta Gerwig and her husband Noah Baumbach. It features Margot Robbie, Ryan Gosling, America Ferrera, Kate McKinnon, Issa Rae, Rhea Perlman, Alexandra Shipp, Emma Mackey, Dua Lipa, and Will Ferrell. The movie revolves around the titular doll who embarks on an adventure in the 'real world' to challenge the superficial standards of perfection.

The worldwide gross for Gerwig's pink-coated fantasy comedy has topped $1 billion. Barbie has reached the desired milestone after only 17 days of release, making history as the Warner Bros. production to reach the $1 billion mark most quickly (and sixth overall in the studio's 100-year history). That record was previously held by Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 at 19 days.
